SAPPO Ramen Zurich Review: Authentic Piping-Hot Burnt Miso Ramen in Switzerland
Hello! We are an expat family of three living in Europe for over four years and running “UMAMI & RAMEN.”
Zurich’s ramen scene has experienced a massive boom over the past few years. What used to be just a handful of options has grown into a vibrant culinary destination with passionate spots crafting their own fresh noodles and signature broths.
Joining this exciting lineup is a major new player in town: SAPPO Ramen.
Since opening its doors, SAPPO Ramen has created a huge buzz among local ramen enthusiasts and the international community alike. Having visited on a busy Saturday, we’re excited to share our honest review—from their incredible smoky burnt miso broth to the smart pay-first ordering system and tips on navigating the wait times!
1. What is SAPPO Ramen? Authentic Sapporo Spirit Meets Swiss Quality
The name “SAPPO” pays homage to Sapporo, the legendary birthplace of miso ramen in Hokkaido, Japan.
Interestingly, SAPPO Ramen was founded not by Japanese owners, but by two Swiss food-and-trend entrepreneurs (Sophie Nham and Christopher Williner). Their mission was clear: to bring authentic Sapporo-style ramen and tsukemen culture to Europe without compromise.
By strictly adhering to traditional Sapporo cooking techniques while utilizing top-tier local produce—such as “Thurgauer Apfelschwein” (Apple Pork) from Canton Thurgau for their melt-in-your-mouth chashu—they have created a masterful fusion of authentic Japanese craftsmanship and high-quality Swiss ingredients.
2. Saturday Crowd & Wait Times: What to Expect Around Noon
As one of the hottest new openings in Zurich, weekend crowds are practically guaranteed.
We arrived on a Saturday around 12:00 PM, and a line had already formed outside the restaurant, so we definitely experienced a noticeable wait time.
- Estimated Turnover: Table turnaround takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes per cycle.
- Tips to Avoid the Queue: If visiting on weekends or holidays, aim to arrive right when they open at 12:00 PM, or drop in after the main lunch rush, around 1:30 PM.
In Europe, ramen dining often leans toward slow-paced meals accompanied by drinks and appetizers. However, SAPPO Ramen manages a relatively smooth and efficient table turnover.
3. Seamless Service: Pay at the Counter Upon Entry
One of the most unique aspects of SAPPO Ramen is its ordering system. Moving away from Europe’s standard full-service model (paying at the table after dining), SAPPO adopts a “pay-at-the-counter upon entry” concept.
You place your order and pay (card accepted) at the front counter before taking a seat. Once you finish eating, you can simply walk out at your own pace. Skipping the post-meal wait for the bill is a fantastic time-saver—especially for travelers on a schedule or families dining with young kids.
4. The Unforgettable Broth: Piping Hot & Rich Burnt Miso
Just a few minutes after sitting down, our bowls arrived. One sip of the soup, and we were instantly hooked.

① Piping Hot Broth—A Rare Gem in Europe
Ramen in Europe can sometimes be served lukewarm to cater to local preferences or temperature settings. SAPPO Ramen breaks this pattern by serving their broth scalding hot from first bite to last. A rich layer of aromatic oil traps the steam inside, keeping the bowl steaming throughout your meal. On a chilly day in Switzerland, this heat is pure comfort.
② A Smoky Explosion: Burnt Miso Flavor Done Right
The standout feature is undoubtedly their signature burnt miso flavor. Miso and garlic are stir-fried over high heat, releasing a deep, smoky aroma that infuses the entire broth with intense umami and savory richness.
Combined with springy, classic yellow Sapporo-style wavy noodles that hold the soup perfectly, it offers a bold, satisfying profile that appeals to local palates while delivering the authentic flavor profile that Japanese foodies crave.
5. Final Thoughts: A Must-Visit Destination in Zurich’s Ramen Scene
SAPPO Ramen in Zurich isn’t just riding the wave of new-opening hype. It stands out with genuine quality: a piping-hot, deeply comforting burnt miso broth and the convenience of a quick order-first system.
Whether you live in Zurich or are traveling through Switzerland craving an authentic, soul-warming bowl of Japanese ramen, SAPPO Ramen is well worth standing in line for!
